Hm.  Thanks for the tip.  I'll try that.  Someone else also suggested
fiddling with -r/-w to set maximum block-size (another option that I
haven't tried yet, but have marked in my memory...(^&).

It's pretty clear why a -r/-w option might help with overruns.  Why would
the read-ahead help?  Was the ``-s'' also part of the suggestion?
