This sounds similar to something that happened with some of my fellow 
techs at my old job.  They burned out there PC Card modems on there 
laptops.  How did this happen?  Connect a modem (analog device) to a 
digital phone line.  Poof goes the modem.  Great point to bring up 
Gan.
