Try jwhois.  I think you'll like it.

        cd /usr/pkgsrc/net/jwhois ; make install

It has a table to get the correct top-level registrar and also chains
through the redirects.  Best unexpected feature is the whois lookup by
IP addr with ARIN et. al.

        jwhois 1.2.3.4
