Subject: maybe it's just the thinkpad...

i'm running netbsd 1.5ZA (GENERIC_LAPTOP) of 2002-01-05 on a thinkpad a20p.

i started by doing a vanilla 1.5.2 install, but had to go to the 1.5ZA kernel because my orinoco 802.11b card wasn't being recognized under 1.5.2.

because the version of xfree86 that came with 1.5.2 (3.x) doesn't support the thinkpad monitor, i'm running xfree86 4.2.0. i got this directly from xfree86.org and followed the "installing for netbsd" instructions.

so, i'm running X, and once or twice a day, i get a 5 second system freeze followed by a hard reboot. no kernel core images are to be found anywhere -- just a flickering screen an then the ibm logo and then netbsd boots.

now maybe i did something screwy here or maybe it's the thinkpad.

the thinkpad had been running win2k for about a year with zero problems, so i'm doubtful that hardware problem just cropped up.

similarly, while it's possible that a misconfigured xfree86 might cause /netbsd to lose it, it runs well most of the time, so i'm doubtful that that's it.

what should i be doing to figure this out? losing 20 minutes a day due to a fsck of a big 'ol disk, isn't part of the netbsd mantra, so any pointers wouldst be appreciated.

thanks,

/mtr
