Serge, 

A lot of the Symbios boards (including the 53c895 and 53c896) are
supported by the siop driver.  Do you see anything about "siop"
or "ncr" among the boot-up messages?  Post the relevant lines here. 
Manuel Bouyer wrote that driver, and he hangs out here quite a lot.
