It's pretty clear that the disk has a bad block, at least. Probably
the disk is failing.

That's a Seagate. Seagate has some utilities on their web site to
low-level format IDE drives, which could be worth a shot. The drive
may even still be under manufacturer's warranty. Check the web site.
