Wow, that did it! Many, many thanks... All those perl-warnings got on
my nerves. (Ever tried a "make readme" for pkgsrc/x11/gnome? Besides
it taking ages (somehow it bailed out here after more than 30 hours(!!!) 
on my P-II-266) it spewed lots of those warnings...)
