The config I create with xf86config. this has worked before.

as far as I know yes, since X has worked before.

It goes to a console I've never been able to get to.

been there, done that, lost my luggage and travelers checks.

In a fit of pique I trashed all of these I could find. Invariably some file
I didn't know about was being used.

I thought I tried that: lots of stuff there, I'll see what they have for
3.3.6.
