No mail has been sent to grant yet.

It is a Berkeley format mbox file. All messages in one file. Each message
is started with a "From " line (and ends with a blank line).

Maybe delete the grant mailbox first (if you know it has no new messages
in it).

Just send an email to grant.

echo "test" | mail -s "first email" grant

What was the message from mutt?

pine and mutt should allow you to compose and send mail without having any
mail in your incoming mail box.

Good idea. (You'll probably find that the text-based console utilities are
faster and more powerful.)
