A standalone memory checker, called memtest86 is available through
the NetBSD pkgsrc in pkgsrc/sysutils/memtest or from
http://www.memtest86.com/.
I've never used it so I can't say how it works or if it works well
but I've seen several references to it in the past.
Others are available, should be accessible through google or any
other web search engine.
