Hi,

I have been using NetBSD at work for a few years. I like it a lot. Thanks
to all of you who make it happen.

I have recently installed it at home, in one 'corner' of the second disk
drive of the Windows 98 machine (NetBSD 1.5.2/i386, X, wmx). I am having
trouble with printing. There are two parallel port devices: lpt0 and lpa0;
there are a number of input filter options: lpf and various scripts. One
sample filter script sent an escape sequence with echo and called an
initialization string. Then there is ghostscript and its device types.

There are many permutations of all these factors and I do not have the
time to try more. I have already spent a few hours on this. I can print
normal text without the 'stair case' problem. Things often pause for a
very long time. I have not gotten a nice PS print yet.

Questions:

1) Do I need to send an initialization string? Where do I find such
things? I have looked with Google and AltaVista. It may be a PCL3
string common to all such devices.

2) Which device should I use? I saw comments that some HP printers
   work better with polling.

3) Which ghostscript device should I specify. One Linux HowTo
suggested there are problems the 672C.

4) Do I need to use apsfilter or magicfilter?

More simply put: If you got this printer to work, how did you do it?

By the way, I am aware of groff and some of its capabilities. Is it used
for actual document processing or has LaTeX replaced it? Does Lyx run well
under NetBSD?

Thanks.
