How many is the depth of the X?
If you have xanim installed, does that work?

I had similar problem when I ran XFree86 server at the depth of 24.
(It was not on NetBSD though...)
I think Acrobat Reader is one of the X application which need that the
screen depth is power of two. So you should start X server at the
depth of 16 or 32, etc.
