You should have a look at usb and pcmcia/cardbus SCSI (and probably
network) adapters. They do attach network and scsi devices upon insertion.
Might be what you want.

You may want to post to tech-kern@netbsd.org for future questions,
i guess not too many of our kernel gurus are on this list. ;)
