Okay, Dave asked for these results. And my modem is
a USRobotics 56K Faxmodem model 5686. The order part
number is USR5685D. There are DIP switches on the back.
Here are my settings:

Data Terminal Ready normal    (versus Data Terminal Ready override)
Verbal result codes           (versus Numeric result codes)
Display result codes          (versus Suppress result codes)
Echo offline commands         (versus No echo, offline commands)
Auto answer off               (versus Auto answer on first ring, or 
                               higher if specified in NVRAM)
Load factory defaults         (versus Load NVRAM defaults)
Smart mode                    (versus Dumb mode)

I made those settings as/per recommendations on the box. I presume
that they are for Windows?
