Hi,
there is one thing to consider: the visual effects are intended to be
started in more or less timeframes. Every unix will not give an
application full control of the hardware. For your needs you will be
looking for a real time OS. That is the reason why today sound
studios still use Ataris and such.
NetBSD can do the job, but you should be aware, that if for some
reasons during a show eg. a filsystemcheck starts or some
programm uses all the CPU time, the visual effects could get out of
sync.
