By default, your X starts with twm. This is defined in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc.

Each user can have their own customized xinitrc. To start KDE, simply have
a ~/.xinitrc file with the command "startkde" (or "exec startkde" at
the end of it).
