How does it look like when you do this?

  % /usr/bin/ktrace /usr/pkg/bin/nvi
  (exits Nvi)
  % /usr/bin/kdump | /usr/bin/grep NAMI

(BTW, how is "nvi -c cmd" used, and why doesn't "nvi -c 'q'" work?)
