If you look back over the port-i386 mailing list archives, you'll see that
I went and:

a) Diagnosed the problem.
b) Put up binaries that most people claimed fixed the problem for them.

It's a bug in XFree86; the Linux console driver restores the VGA palette
so when someone broke the palette-restoration code (it's broken in two
places, actually) they never noticed.

Sigh.
