Just noticed this problem has already been logged with send-pr (odd, I
did numerous searches on the subject a few weeks ago when I first ran
into the problem and only turned up 2 matches on one of the vaxen
lists)

Anyway, http://www.NetBSD.org/cgi-bin/query-pr-single.pl?number=12029
describes the identical problem, although the originator is running
-current whilst I'm still on -release.

With 1.5.1-release supposedly out RSN, this would be a show-stopper
for my setup.  If anybody has any pointers on where to start looking
to debug I don't mind having a look (apart from tracing back from
sys/net/if_ethersubr.c).
