Whoops, now I got it. There really was a difference. As normal user,
I always started X with "startx -- -bpp 32". Tried starting with plain
"startx" as normal user and lo, X didn't work correctly. I put
the "-bpp 32" to gdm.conf and it works a treat now.
But definitely somewhere seems to be a bug, if X server behaves incorrectly
in 8bpp mode.
I'm running X from stock 1.5 installation on i386. My gfx card is
Leadtek's (some implemenation of) Riva TNT2.
