I have a similar problem. I posted this to gnats (port-i386/6552) and
also would like to know how to fix this. My hardware is the same Apaptec
2940UW controller, with a wide drive on one cable, and 2 CDROMS and a
Jaz drive on the other cable. The problem occurs even with one or both
cables removed.

I was able to get some diagnostics by booting to an IDE drive (where I
had installed 1.5 without the SCSI controller), and then viewing the
kernel messages as the system tried to probe the Adaptec.
