I don't have any help for you. But also when I try to save a PDF file it
gives me an error "Cannot open file
/home/reed/gv_3aa66afd_1_Linux_vs_FreeBSD.ps.tmp: No such file or
directory". So I can confirm your statement above "it appears that ... the
program looses track of the appropriate temporary file".

I also couldn't find any temporary file other than:
gv_3aa66b70_1_Linux_vs_FreeBSD.pdf.tmp

As a workaround, use the xpdf program. (It successfully creates
postscript from a PDF for me.)
