As I understood it, Tracy J. Di Marco White produced those images.  The
NetBSD-1.5-multiboot was the first multiboot CD image.  Tracy then worked
out how to let a couple more platforms boot from the same ISO, and created
multiboot2.  The last, multiboot3, came about because of a small error for
one of the platforms that multiboot2 was supposed to boot on.

So my memory of Tracy's announcements goes.  If Tracy is reading this
list, perhaps we'll get a more authoritative answer.  (^&


Read the README.html in the same directory.  If you only need to boot an
i386 (or some other specific system), you might be able to save on
download time by getting a smaller, more machine-specific ISO image.  If
you want, or need, the ability to boot from CD on a number of platforms,
then presumably multiboot3 is your best bet.  (I can confirm, first-hand,
that it works with i386.  (^&)
