I didn't have a recent enough backup of that directory, and a number
of ignorantly-taken steps prevented me from reconstructing enough of
my partition table to look at it. And then I would also have had to
know it was there, which I didn't at the time.

No worry -- that drive is long since reformatted and in use with all
new bits on it.
