Many partitions are larger than DAT tapes, especially now that hard disks
are big and software RAID is easy. So to use Amanda, I'd need to break
filesystems down into smaller partitions or use more expensive hardware.

The Exabyte Mammoth II looks neat, I found a writeup about it at
http://www.sresearch.com/sp_exabyte9809.htm Doing further reading, it
looks like the native uncompressed capacity of the Mammoth II tapes is 60
GB. The drive costs between 4 or 5 grand, and the tapes cost about $100 a
piece.
