Never mind; I was dreaming when I said that the built-in ROM would see the 
tape drive.  Hooked up another drive, same problem.  It's an LVDT SCSI 
drive, must be that it won't work unless I have an LVDT compatible 
controller.  (Suggestions gratefully accepted.)  (I have an LVDT 
controller, 29160 model, but the kernel doesn't probe the controller.  Same 
controller + same tape works on the NT server.  Oh well....)
