Use a TTL/RS232 converter... something like a MAX232...

You may be able to test the port and its status using snooper. It can
be found in pkgsrc/coms/snooper... I've used a several time to analyze
traffic on RS232. If I remember correctly, it also show the status of
the handshaking lines including DCD...
