Greetings,

I have just installed NetBSD 1.4.2. This is my very first stab
at NetBSD, but I do have a thorough familiarity with POSIXy
OSes and TCP/IP setup. The install went without incident (I
used ftp from netbsd.org), then I started poking around to see
how things were setup. I tried to ftp in and out and telnet in
and out and got some rather unexpected results.

I'll limit this message to telnet for the moment, and perhaps
that will explain everything. Basically, inbound telnet is
unpredictable. The first inbound session after booting
terminates immediately, indicating that the remote system
(NetBSD) closed the connection. Subsequent attempts to connect
either a) bring up a normal login or b) report "Connected to
DelMonte!" and prompt for a Password. I have not determined
what causes a) or b) to occur. It appears to be
  non-deterministic.

So what's going on? What is DelMonte? This appears to be some
kernel-level diagnostic access, but why am I getting it?
What password does it want? (none of the ones I've defined,
  clearly).

Inbound FTP also shows some flakiness, sometimes working fine,
other times appearing to be broken in various ways.

Am I missing some final step in the setup process? Do I have
something enabled that shouldn't be somewhere?

  All clues welcome!
