Some information that might be helpful is what your nsswitch.conf looks
like.

If you have passwd: compat or passwd: nis files in your nsswitch.conf,
well, obviously, it's going to fail because it's trying to talk to a
network, somehow.

Though, I'm a bit baffled by that, since if you're not attached to
a network, you won't have ypbind running or a domainname set, and any
attempt to connect to yp will be refused immediately.

Of course if you're not on a network, you're also not going to be
running portmap (rpcbind), since you'll have nothing which will need
to run RPC (unless there's some stuff in X that uses it?).
