Thanks.  Although sane is not an application, its home page led me to the
front end, xsane + gimp.

My scanner is a Microtek ScanMaker 4, which is not on sane's supported
hardware list, although a lot of other ScanMakers are.  I suspect if it
doesn't work with the current version it should be included soon.

I'll give the package a try.
