I have a couple of minor problems. One is with fonts and the Gimp, the
other is with sounds and GNOME. Since I recently uninstalled nearly all
of my packages, sup'ed pkgsrc, and rebuilt fresh from pkgsrc, my problems
seem to be more or less inherent in the way that the packages build.
(However, I dunno whether the fault lies with quirks in pkgsrc, or if it's
a problem with The Gimp and GNOME projects---my feeling is that it's the
latter.)

The Gimp's various logo facilities try to use fonts that don't exist on my
system (e.g., ``Bippo''). This has been this way whenever I have
installed the Gimp. It seems sloppy on their part to have most (all?) of
their logo-generating scripts default to nonstandard fonts. (frown) I
took a peek at some of our fonts packages; they seem to focus on
internationalization---a good thing, but of no help for the trophy-hunter
in search of the wild Bippo in its native environment. For someone who
has a pretty vanilla X setup, how would I go about getting the fonts
installed to make the Gimp happy?

(I _did_ find The Gimp's web page about fonts. One link (Freefonts &
Sharefonts) goes nowhere. The Truetype fonts, on the other hand, require
a Truetype fontserver; while we have FreeType, my understanding is that
it's not a font-server for X. Do we have a FreeType-based (or any
Truetype-supporting) font sever in pkgsrc? (I haven't even looked to see
if the required fonts are under the Truetype set.)

Similar in nature, the GNOME, straight out of pkgsrc, has a bunch of
sounds preconfigured. Most of them work. (All of the applications, and
most of the GNOME desktop sounds.) A few, however, cannot be found, and
GNOME suggests that I install gnome-audio---but I _have_ that
installed. An example of a missing sound file is info.wav, for
Informational Messages. (Package gnome is at version 1.0.53; package
gnome-audio is at 1.0.0.)

Neither is really a critical problem. I can substitute sound files by one
means or another for the GNOME. However, since The Gimp doesn't let you
configure defaults for its scripts, I can't fix the Gimp quite so
easily. (I'm loathe to create copies/links of real fonts to pacify The
Gimp.) I can, of course, always manually specify a font, or (if I really
get sick of the situation) search-and-replace the font-names in the
scripts. I'd rather have the intended fonts installed, though. (^&

Help on either front would be appreciated, though again the problems
aren't critical.
