They can coexist. I have not tested them on my machine (I do not 
need desktop environments) when using xterminals simply typing 
./kde & or ./gnome & in their directory will launch them. I have not 
looked after it for a while, but you also might consider ude (Unix 
Desktop Environment) at http://www.ude.org/, these folks do not use 
a GUI toolkit like Qt or Gtk but code with the basic Xlib, so it should 
be less resource hungry then the others.
