Data integrity problems.  Basically, too many people would hack up their
clients for one reason or another.  Binary distribution doesn't make this
impossible, but it raises the barrier to entry.

Malice aside, there's a *LOT* of people who would "optimize" this code
incorrectly.

They'd rather have a smaller audience running *known* code.
