I can't get the box to boot into single user mode.

I've just been handed this machine at work and the admin who made it
is of unknown origin :) so needless to say noone knows the root
password (noone knows the password to the gator box either what a
mess I just jumped into!!!)

I'd like to not have to trash the disk and start all over again.

can anybody help?
