OK, it's me again.  I'm still having trouble with my Network Card.

I have a Linksys 10/100 card (it has to be in 100 mode because I have a
100 only hub).

I checked dmesg and the info for the network card is:

Lite-On Communications 82C168/82C169 (PNIC) 10/100 Ethernet (ethernet
network, revision 0x20) at pci0 dev 17 function 0 not configured

I can't see anything else that looks like it would apply.  Any
suggestions on how to get this thing going.

BTW: ifconfig doesn't work.  I tried a couple of ways that have already
been suggested.
