I have'nt had the same trouble, but I suggest you turn the log level up. In
smb.conf put a line (or uncomment)

    log level = 3

3 is a good figure in my experience.

Make sure there is a "log file" directive there too.

HUP *all* smbd and nmbd daemons (or restart samba entirely) after changing
smb.conf.

What version of Samba is it?
