I've recompiled the kernel without DDB, and I still have the same deadlock
problems as before. It happens at random, either when starting a new
xterm, or in a xscreensaver module. I can still switch virtual terminals
with Ctrl-Alt-Fn, and X will shut down with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, but when I
try to log in on another terminal it only goes as far as taking my user
name and then I get nothing.

All I can do at that point is hit the reset button.
