  Hmm, a quick glance at "ip_ftp_pxy.c" showed that this is the same
version for 1.4.x and -current.  So I'm not sure whether updating will
really help you here ...

  The only other thing I can think of in your case is that perhaps you
need to move up the 'proxy' line to be the first ipnat rule.  That's the
way it worked for me.
