In a word: "hardware".

Difficult to tell what hardware -- the problem went away when I
switched the SCSI disk for an IDE one, but a day later the power
supply was declared to be dead so maybe that was the cause all along.

NetBSD is innocent, anyway, which is what this list cares about!
