Update: I've just installed the binaries of the new NetBSD 1.4 release
-- still using the April 23 kernel.  Now when I try to shut down from
within X Windows, the system doesn't panic, it simply hangs after:

syncing disks... 5 5 done

I am unable to do anything except a hard reset.
