Sorry, which 3com setup utility is that? Also, how do I get the
kernel to provide me the information you want?

Interestingly, after booting Windows, and then NetBSD, I'm now no
longer finding the device. So at this point sysinst is telling me "I
can not find any network interfaces for use by NetBSD. You will be
returned to the previous menu." though earlier I had easily sailed
right past this problem with a fresh installation of the kern.tgz set,
per the installation instructions.

I have roughly checked out my hardware for support and I see the
install document at ftp://ftp.eecs.umich.edu/pub/NetBSD/arch/i386/snap-19990315/NetBSD-1.3K/i386/INSTALL.html

... says the 3Com 3C589 is a supported device, though it does not give
any interrupt or other configuration requirements for it. It is
mentioned exactly once in the document, as far as I can tell.

As far as interrupts go, the machine has a working Windows 98
installation (and working network connection all very nicely acting as
a dhcp client of my netbsd gateway 10.0.0.1) on a different partition.
In so far as I know how to use Windows (i.e. not very far) it seems to
say the following about my ethernet card from the "Control
Panel/System/Device Manager/Network adapters/3Com Etherlink III PCMCIA
(3C589D) Properties/Resources" window selection:

3Com EtherLink III PCMCIA (3C589D)

X Use automatic settings

Resource Type Setting
------------- -------
Input/Output Range	1020-102F

Does this provide any needed info?

Thanks in advance for your help,
