  Yes,  that was the problem.  It seems that my ppp-up and ppp-down
scripts that I got from one of the kits, do some moving of resolv.conf
to resolv.conf.down and vice versa.  Between using the ppp-up and down
scripts  and xisp ( which also uses that resolv.conf file )  something got
messed up with that file.  I did the "chmod 666 resolv.conf " and it seems
to be working now.
