What do you mean by 'not really stable'? Could you give some more details?
If you want to have a new GENERIC kernel, try the beta kernel in
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.3_BETA/i386/binary/sets/kern.tgz
