I certainly hope not, we use a lot of Perl5 under NetBSD 1.2.1 :-)

I did recently try Perl 5.004_04 under NetBSD 1.3ALPHA (the i386
snapshot dated early this month)... it compiles and installs very
cleanly, and works OK, but the lib/complex test shows errors related
to trig functions. All other tests are passed just fine. I don't
know if that is a Perl problem or a bug in the libraries in 1.3ALPHA.
The same version of Perl passes all tests perfectly when compiled
under NetBSD 1.2.1 using GCC 2.7.2.1 ... leading me to suspect
compiler or library version differences are responsible, not Perl
itself.

I did just try mirror-2.8 under NetBSD 1.2.1 and it worked flawlessly
here, retrieving well over 50 files first try. That was under:

    perl, version 5.003 with EMBED
built under netbsd at Nov 8 1996 10:50:40
    + suidperl security patch
