As it turned out, ksh allows me to do arrow-key command line history *and*
dynamic shell prompts. Consequently, I've switched over to ksh, and life is
happier.

FYI: Dabe Murphy wrote and told me that ksh has to be in emacs mode to do
arrow key history stuff. EDITOR=emacs; export EDITOR did the trick.
