Strange! It is in the base121.tar.gz file of the i386 binary
distribution as ./usr/bin/cksum -- right where one would expect to
find it. This file is available at:

  ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.2.1/i386/binaries/Tarfiles/base121.tar.gz

Note that in general you don't need any compiler at all, cross or
native, to install NetBSD/i386. Just use a binary distribution. I'd
suggest you install stock 1.2.1 if you are having problems installing
-current. Once you have a working NetBSD/i386 system, then consider
going to -current if and when you need a fix that it provides that is
not in 1.2.1.

I'd suggest that you get your machines up and running NetBSD first,
then worry about figuring out relatively esoteric things like
cross-compiling :-)
