This may be the reason. There is about 12inches between the SCSI
controler connector at one end of the bus and the next connector (the
dat drive) but only another inch 2 at most from the dat drive
connector to the end connector on the lead where the Harddrive is
connected. If the harddribe then terminates the lead I get the
problems if I leave it un terminated it works.

I'm going to try some internel active thgrough terminators out. I hope
that if I add one of these to the end of the bus and plug the hard
drive into this I won't need to set termianton on the dat drive or the
harddrive and the bus will be correctly terminated without any
problems.
