Not so. With a good antenna (and line of sight) you should be able to use
them. We use a couple for a few-mile link between a mountaintop repeater
and Simon Fraser University. It works well.

Users come into the repeater at 56K using custom gear, this gives me and
the other users 24 hour net access.
