Subject: swap not on sdXb of a generic kernel booted from sdXa ?

How can I advice/configure a generic kernel to boot from
say sd3a and swap to say sd0b without compiling it into the
kernel via 'root on .. swap on .. ..'?

 Currently the kernel asks me because there are some boot errors
 so I can type it in. But how could I specify it staticly?
