I have not been able to get multicast to work with ppp yet and was
hoping that someone could shed some light on what I am be doing wrong.

The ip of the machine at home is 129.186.142.93 and the ip of the
machine which is doing the packet forwarding is 129.186.142.95.

  I do
    route add -net 224.0.0.0 129.186.142.9[3,5] -netmask 240.0.0.0
  on each respective machine.

A ping 224.0.0.1 on 129.196.142.95 works fine and I receive replies
from several machines. A ping to the same address on 129.186.142.93
returns replies from 129.186.142.93 and 129.186.142.95.

I have tried a simple tunnel entry between the two machines but
mrouted on 129.186.142.95 says that it is ignoring ppp0 and mrouted on
129.186.142.93 says that the entry to 129.186.142.95 is not required.

Both the options MULTICAST (is this required anymore) and MROUTING
have been enabled in both kernels.

Ideally, 129.186.142.93 would be able to join multicast groups and
receive the packets intended for that group.

  Any suggestions?

  Thanks.
